Preparation for publication of an online digital edition and print publication of volume 4 of the papers of social reformer and political activist Jane Addams (1860-1935). (24 months)

The Jane Addams Papers Project at Ramapo College of New Jersey’s Salameno School of Humanities and Global Studies publishes documents covering the years 1901-1935 in two formats. The first, a freely available digital edition, publishes images, transcriptions, and metadata for all correspondence and writings between 1901-1935. The second is the Selected Papers of Jane Addams, which provides transcribed and annotated versions of about 3% of the most historically significant texts. The digital edition is drawn from a digitization of an existing microfilm and the proceeds of an updated archival search. Another aim of the project is to serve as a lab for undergraduate students to gain practical experience in historical research, writing, public history, and digital humanities.

Preparation for publication of volumes 5 and 6 of the Selected Papers of Jane Addams and a digital edition of the social reformer’s writings and letters from 1901-1935. (36 months)

The Jane Addams Papers Project is a scholarly editing project that will publish documents covering the years 1901-1935 in two formats. The first, the Jane Addams Digital Edition, is a freely-available edition of images, transcriptions, and metadata for all correspondence and writings. The second, The Selected Papers of Jane Addams, is a seven-volume edition that will contain transcribed and annotated documents covering the same years, with the most historically significant documents selected for publication. The project is also conducting a search for new Addams material that will be added to its publications and developing educational resources to encourage the use of the materials. It also serves as a practical experience using digital humanities tools for undergraduate students at the college.

The preparation of volume 3 of the papers and the beginning of preparation for volume 4.

The Jane Addams Papers Project seeks support to prepare the manuscript for volume three of the edition to be published in print and on the Internet by the University of Illinois Press. It will feature "behind-the-scenes" and timely descriptions of the founding and development of the social settlement Hull-House in Chicago, present the emergence of a variety of reform movements, reveal a growing group of reformers, some known, some not-so-well known, and illuminate the continuing development of Jane Addams (1860-1935) as a leader and national spokesperson for social reform, 1889-1900. Prepared using accepted documentary editing standards, this edition will provide an ever-widening audience, scholars to general readers, with direct access to Addams's words and deeds through the organized publication of the key documents with the editors providing the indispensable service of carefully transcribing and annotating difficult-to-decipher handwritten documents for readers.
