The long term goal is to strengthen community-driven archives and create sustainable curatorial partnerships with historically under-represented communities.

Special Collections, a unit within Randall Library''s Center for Southeast North Carolina Archives and History at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, seeks a follow-up Preservation Assistance Grant (PAG) to support the purchase of preservation supplies in order to implement a recommendation made in a preservation survey assessment funded by a previously successful PAG. Specifically, this project will focus on implementing a recommendation pertaining to Special Collections'' book collections in which it was suggested that staff "rehouse damaged volumes, currently in envelopes, in phase boxes or wrappers for better support." Using purchased supplies, Special Collections staff intend to focus activities on creating preservation housing for approximately 664 items in its Southeast North Carolina Collection, which contains rare, published works pertaining to the history and culture of this geographically unique region.

The Special Collections Department of the J. Murrey Atkins Library at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte proposes to fund a preservation survey and report for a collection of television news film dating from 1959 to 1981. This important collection consists of 804 reels of film produced by Charlotte's WBTV, the oldest television broadcasting station in the Carolinas. This survey and report will be performed by an expert in the field of audio-visual film, who will work closely with the Department's manuscript librarian. Based on the report's recommendations, the library will develop plans that will ultimately result in preserving, arranging, and describing the films according to the best archival practices and making this valuable collection of local and regional history available to the public via traditional and digital means.

The Southern Folklife Collection (SFC) of the Louis Round Wilson Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill plan to preserve and make accessible unique audio recordings documenting southern traditional music. For this project, the SFC will create preservation master files and reference copies from recordings presently at risk and unavailable for public research. The materials will be processed and cataloged according to national and local standards and be made available to researchers in the Wilson Library reading room. Based on prior audio preservation experience we expect to preserve and make accessible 2350 hours of audio recordings over the two-year period (a ratio of three hours studio time to one hour playtime).

The digitized content will be made available to researchers via CONTENTdm and Variations, an online streaming system developed by Indiana University. Based on prior experience, we expect to preserve and make accessible up to 3,019 hours of audio recordings and 4,500 photographs over the project period.
