Endowment for the Director of Conservation position at Winterthur to enhance thle museum's extensive programs in conservation.

Winterthur Museum requests a $500,000 NEH Challenge Grant to help establish a $2 million endowment to support the position of Director of Conservation and enhance its mission by creating two vital program expansions: the creation of a new post-graduate fellowship program in conservation and funding for staff development and scientific instrumentation. Winterthur’s decision to endow this position is part of the long-range plan to invest in its intellectual leadership. The position is essential to advancing Winterthur’s role in conservation education and research and to expanding the preservation and interpretation of humanities collections at Winterthur, throughout the United States, and increasingly the world. Endowment of the Director of Conservation will guarantee that Winterthur remains competitive in attracting and maintaining the most highly-qualified leaders in the field while enhancing its fundamental educational and research activities.

Preparation of a critical study and translation into English of articles on print-making in Denis Diderot and Jean d'Alembert's Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, 1751-1772.

This project is a critical study and English translation of the three most important articles on printmaking published in Diderot and d’Alembert’s Encyclopédie between 1755 and 1758. The articles were collaboratively written by several scholars, practitioners, and amateurs of printed images: Claude-Henri Watelet (1718-1786), Antoine Gautier de Montdorge (1701-1768), Jean-Michel Papillon (1698-1776), and Louis de Jaucourt (1704-1779). They formulated, for the first time, the aesthetic and epistemological consequences of the eighteenth-century color printing revolution: the emergence of a modern concept of art reproduction, and the notion that a printed image taught not only through its representation but also through its own material production. The translated articles will be part of the Encyclopedia of Diderot & d’Alembert Collaborative Translation Project, a free, collaborative digital humanities endeavor hosted by the University of Michigan Library.

Planning of a traveling exhibition, catalog, interactive website, regional travel guide, symposium, and public and educational programs exploring the diversity of furniture-making and ownership in the region in the period.

Winterthur is organizing a major traveling exhibition, "Paint, Pattern, and Plain Style, Furniture of Southeastern Pennsylvania," the first to comprehensively examine this region's cultural diversity. Using 125 objects borrowed from various institutions and private collections to understand the lives of the people who made or owned them, the exhibition will debunk many myths about the dominance of a homogenous Pennsylvania "Dutch" culture, the primitive and unskilled nature of rural arts, and the religious symbolism of folk designs. The stunning visual appeal of the objects and the great tourism interest in the culture of southeastern PA will attract a national audience. A fully illustrated scholarly publication and Web-based component featuring well-documented furniture, a variety of educational programs, a major symposium, special period room tours, and a travel guide to historic houses, museums, and cultural events in the southeastern PA region will accompany the exhibition.

A grant to establish a long-term storage plan to increase accessibility and improve preventive care of the museum’s collection of over 90,000 American decorative and fine arts objects displayed in 175 room settings.

Winterthur requests a $50,000 planning grant to create a long-term plan to solve its current storage challenges. The plan and eventual storage solution must improve preventive care; be environmentally, financially, and socially sustainable; and increase accessibility to better serve guests, students, scholars, and staff for decades to come. The planning grant activity period marks a critical phase in the ten-year plan to implement accessible storage solutions for Winterthur’s preeminent collections of American decorative and fine arts objects, library materials, garden objects, and estate artifacts. Staff will work with a team of interdisciplinary consultants, students, and early-to-mid career professionals to produce two or three comprehensive storage solutions. Each solution will be evaluated to select the best plan to solve storage issues. Winterthur will produce research and lead conferences on developing accessible storage solutions that will be useful for smaller institutions.

An implementation project to improve the management of environmental conditions for the protection of the museum's collections, which include nearly 90,000 fine and decorative arts objects made or used in America between 1640 and 1860. A new climate control and integrated monitoring system would be installed in the museum, galleries, and research library, improving the collection environments in more energy-efficient ways.

Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library is committed to lifelong learning in the humanities and to the sustainable preservation of the collections that support this mission. To this end, Winterthur requests a $350,000 NEH SCHC implementation grant as part of an $873,338 project to enhance the preservation of the collections and reduce collection-related energy costs. Installation of a new HVAC control system will effectively manage energy and the preservation environment in Winterthur’s three major collection buildings–the Museum, Galleries, and Research Building. These buildings house one of America’s outstanding collections of decorative arts and research material related to material culture as well as extensive programming, exhibitions, conservation and scientific research facilities, and two graduate programs critical to training cultural heritage professionals.

An implementation project to identify, catalog, and photograph 350-500 composite objects containing organic materials, such as bone, horn, ivory, shells, skins, and quill. These objects represent a subset of Winterthur collections, which include nearly 90,000 fine and decorative art objects made or used in America between 1640 and 1860.

The Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library seeks a grant of $268,172 to catalogue its collection of “overlooked organic” objects through physical identification and research. These artifacts, crafted from hard matrices and collagen-based organics like horn, ivories, bone, and skins by artists whose craft traditions are culturally, historically, and artistically important. This project focuses on cataloguing a prioritized group of organic objects with accuracy that meets Winterthur’s high standards, acquiring information through visual analysis, research, scientific analysis, and expert consultation. We will create a position for one full-time cataloguing assistant for two years to help Winterthur’s curatorial and conservation staff identify and continue to make the organics collection publicly accessible online. The cataloguing assistant and staff will research, analyze, and fully record materials and culturally significant information for at least 350 objects, and as many as 500 objects.

Winterthur is a center for advanced study in America's artistic, cultural, social, and intellectual history to the early twentieth century. Our ongoing Research Fellowship Program enables scholars to pursue research projects for the duration of one to six months. Past NEH support enabled us to expand this program through the addition of long-term fellowships (six-twelve months) for advanced scholars. Research fellows are drawn to Winterthur by the strength of our research collections, our commitment to scholarly activity, and our facilities for scholars. Former fellows have included leading scholars in American social and cultural history, and publications resulting from their work often have been cited for scholarly excellence. Winterthur now seeks NEH support to continue offering long-term fellowships.

The equivalent to one fellowship per year for three years.

Winterthur is a center for advanced study in America's artistic, cultural, social, and intellectual history to the early twentieth century. Our ongoing Research Fellowship Program enables scholars to pursue research projects for the duration of one to six months. Past NEH support enabled us to expand this program through the additon of long-term fellowships (six to twelve months) for advanced scholars. Research fellows are drawn to Winterthur by the strength of our research collections, our commitment to scholarly activity, and our facilities for scholars. Former fellows have included leading scholars in American social and cultural history, and publications resulting from their work often have been cited for scholarly excellence. Two four-month fellowships a year for three years at the Winterthur Museum. Grant funds support fellows' stipends and help defray expenses related to the process of selecting fellows.

Winterthur Museum, Garden, & Library is committed to lifelong learning in the humanities, and support from NEH's Fellowship Programs at Independent Research Institutions is a critical component of this endeavor. To this end, Winterthur requests funding for three years of fellowship aid for 2013-16, at eight months of aid per year (two four-month semesters per year). Our research fellows have diverse interests and backgrounds, but are united by their interest in studying American history through material culture. Drawn to Winterthur by the strength of our research collections, our commitment to scholarly activities, and our facilities, former fellows have included leading scholars in American social and cultural history, and publications resulting from their work have been cited for scholarly excellence
