Van Buren was a critical political thinker who inherited and cherished the worldview of his Revolutionary forefathers, while adapting their values to the shifting democratic landscape of the United States. His documents provide insight into the passionate partisanship of the nation’s early years and the centrality of political parties to a democratic society.
