humanities project to document changes on the campus of Morehouse College
through archival maps and photographs.
This spatial humanities project uses archival maps and photographs to describe how the campus of Morehouse College evolved and changed over time. The project is inspired by the work of humanistic geographers who offer an understanding of the human world by studying history and culture in regard to space and place. I argue that, more than a backdrop, the surrounding West End neighborhood is key to understanding the development of the urban campus. The focus will be on the last 125 years of the college’s growth, from 1900 - 2025 and include the adjacent Atlanta University Center Consortium institutions. Key examples of the archival resources central to this project include the 1930s map “The Atlanta University Campus Map, circa 1933” in the John Hope Records at the Atlanta University Center Robert W. Woodruff Library as well as digital and map archives at the Atlanta History Center. The proposed outcomes include a research article, an undergraduate course revision and a mobile exhibit. |
