WPSU Penn State Public Broadcasting, a division of Penn State Outreach, requests a Public Impact Projects grant of $200,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to produce Spirits of Sovereignty: The Whiskey Rebellion and the Shaping of a Nation, a 30-minute documentary commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This film will explore the complex interplay between citizen protest and federal authority during the Whiskey Rebellion (1791–1794) and highlight how this seminal event shaped American national identity and the meaning of constitutional governance. The project will deepen public understanding of the Founding Era through rigorous humanities interpretation, featuring primary documents, expert interviews, immersive reenactments, and innovative mixed-media production approaches to public humanities storytelling. |
