A three-week combined
format institute introducing 30 teachers to hip hop-based education.
This proposal is for a three-week combined institute for 25-30 secondary English language arts teachers entitled, Hip Hop as Humanities: Counterstories for the Canon, Classroom, and Country. The institute will be held virtually for two consecutive weeks, July 7 to July 18, 2025, and in-person on the campus of Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from July 28 to August 1, 2025. Through a variety of readings, guest lectures, professional development workshops, collaborative teaching and learning activities, and place-based learning experiences, participants will explore Hip Hop's history, philosophy, language, literature, and arts and its possibilities for reimagining what, how, and why they teach English language arts.
