The Design of the Independence Arch

This project advances the conceptual design of the Independence Arch, a proposed commemorative monument marking the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026. Conceived as a symbolic gateway between Arlington National Cemetery and the National Mall, the arch draws on the classical tradition of monumental architecture to explore themes of liberty, civic responsibility, and self-government. Through the development of architectural plans, renderings, and models, the project examines how form, scale, and symbolism can convey historical meaning in public space. By engaging the language of traditional monument design, the project invites reflection on foundational humanities questions, including civic virtue, national memory, and the relationship between sacrifice and freedom in the American experience.
